Since its inception in 1926, the Steedman has been jointly governed by the School of Architecture, (now the College of Architecture and Graduate School of Architecture & Urban Design) part of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, and the AIA St. Louis. Each of these organizations appoints a representative; a chair, who must be a practicing architect in St. Louis, is elected by Washington University and AIA St. Louis.
